Beatification vs Canonization
Understanding the difference and Carlo's journey to sainthood
What is Beatification?
Beatification is the third step in the process of becoming a saint. When someone is beatified, they receive the title "Blessed" and can be venerated in specific regions or communities. Beatification requires one verified miracle (except for martyrs).
Carlo Acutis was beatified on October 10, 2020, in Assisi, Italy, after the approval of his first miracle—the healing of Mattheus from Brazil.
What is Canonization?
Canonization is the final step, declaring someone a saint of the universal Church. Saints can be venerated worldwide and are officially recognized as being in Heaven. Canonization requires a second verified miracle.
Carlo Acutis was canonized on September 7, 2025, by Pope Leo XIV, after the approval of his second miracle—the healing of Valeria from Costa Rica.
The Steps to Sainthood
- Servant of God - The cause is opened
- Venerable - Heroic virtue is recognized (Carlo: July 5, 2018)
- Blessed - First miracle approved (Carlo: October 10, 2020)
- Saint - Second miracle approved (Carlo: September 7, 2025)
Why Two Miracles?
The Church requires miracles as signs that the person is in Heaven and can intercede for us. These miracles must be scientifically inexplicable, instantaneous, and complete. The rigorous investigation ensures authenticity.
